Remembering and Embracing Childhood Dreams

July 11, 2022

(Here we have Meg driving 150 mph! Check out her instructor’s face 🤣🤗)

Since I was around five years old, I’ve been saying I wanted to be a race car driver. Probably not surprising, considering my dad had been a race car driver since before I was born. I stopped saying it for many years, picked it back up again later, and then eventually became a “responsible adult” and mostly forgot about it. Sure, I didn’t lose my love of cars or driving fast, but it never really occurred to me that my childhood dream could actually come true. Until recently. The month of June 2022 marks the month that my childhood dream started coming true. (Squeeeee!!) It started with a trip to the track on Father’s Day Weekend and a ride-along in a Porsche GT3 RS with a driver going balls out. By the second lap, all I could think was, “I was born to do this.” I couldn’t stop smiling or laughing the whole time. It had been years since I’d been that excited. When I got out of the car, I was told I was glowing.

I immediately asked our race car driver friend who had invited us to the track, “Can I really become a race car driver? Can I really learn to do that?”

He said, “Absolutely.”

And just like that, I was hooked. And, even better, I already had a Porsche with a roll cage (to make my mom feel better when I drove) that could go balls out on the track too. The wheels began turning.

A few days later, I got a text message telling me the date of the next track day and a few days after that… I was pulling into the race track in my Porsche 911 Turbo to spend the day learning how to drive in ways that would get me arrested on the road. 150mph down the straightaway, jamming on the brakes, taking corners at 60mph. Following every word of my instructor.

Holy. Poop.

It was BANANAS. NUTS. WILD. AWESOME. TERRIFYING. AMAZING.

I’ve never felt so alive in a car before. HOLY. POOP. It’s nearly impossible to explain the balance of awesome and awareness of living right on the edge.

As you might’ve guessed, I’m TOTALLY ADDICTED and going back as soon as possible.

I have no idea where this road is heading, but I’m so excited that I get to drive SO FREAKING FAST down it!!

Also, a huge, massive, ginormous thank you to John, one of my incredible readers, who gifted me this beautiful and thoughtful helmet a couple of years ago when I said I wanted to start driving on the track. Thank you for your support, John! I’m so proud to rock this Meghan March helmet as I chase yet another one of my big dreams! It only seems fitting when one dream has come true that another one will come along to be lived. And even better, Jake is going to do it too!!! Gahhhh! A childhood dream coming true—and I get to share it with the love of my life?? How did I get so lucky??

What were your childhood dreams? It’s totally worth it to spend some time thinking back and remembering. There’s gold in those! If you ever have the chance to make one of yours come true, I hope you take it!

Stay tuned for more Meg and Jake are becoming race car drivers updates!
